About the Program
In Discovery Groups, facilitated by Dr. Comeau, are a core part of our approach to treating depression and anxiety. Patients engage in meaningful discussions and gain valuable insights in a supportive group setting. The program combines:
- Weekly Virtual Group Sessions: Groups meet once a week for 1 hour and 40 minutes.
- Psychiatric Management: Ongoing psychiatric care, including medication management if needed.
- Focused Growth: A recommended 12-month commitment for sustained personal development.
Note: Sessions pause during July and August to allow for summer scheduling.
Program Details
- Meeting Days: Tuesday or Wednesday mornings.
- Format: Virtual, for convenient access.
- Group Size: Up to 9 participants.
- Facilitator: Psychiatrist Dr. Kent Comeau.
Patient Eligibility
To ensure the best outcomes, patients are to meet the following criteria:
- Resident of Alberta, in the Medicine Hat region.
- Moderate to severe depression or anxiety symptoms.
- Referred by a primary care provider.
- Aged 18-65.
- Suitable for virtual care.
- Willing to commit to weekly sessions for at least 12 months.
- Failed at least 3 antidepressant trials (non-response or intolerance).
- Not actively suicidal or requiring a higher level of care.
- Symptoms not primarily caused by substance use or severe active substance use issues.
- No primary psychotic illness or bipolar I disorder.
- For those with personality vulnerabilities: must have clear goals and a willingness to grow and commit to the group.

This program is fully covered by Alberta Health Insurance (AHI).
